The Spectre
Tribute to Dave Smith
Nearly half a century had passed since Roger Penrose discovered an aperiodic tiling of 2 tiles named Kite & Dart.
Since then, mathematicians have been doubtful about the possibility of a single aperiodic tile, which they named the "einstein" (a stone in German).
I've been corresponding with Dave for about ten years,
and I was impressed by his skill and his drive to always find new tessellations. So when he discovered the "Holy Grail of tessellations," I was really happy for him because he deserved it. And what's more
he hasn't let it go to his head!
